Jaisalmer Fort
Overview of Jaisalmer Fort
Jaisalmer Fort, known as the 'Sonar Quila' or Golden Fort, is one of the very few 'living forts' in the world. Rising majestically from the heart of the Thar Desert, its massive yellow sandstone walls take on a brilliant golden hue at sunset. Built in 1156 AD, the fort protects an entire town within its walls, including thousands of residents, ancient temples, and bustling markets. Its narrow winding streets lead to beautifully carved havelis, Jain temples dating back to the 12th century, and the royal palace. Exploring the fort is like stepping back in time, where the desert's history and modern-day life coexist in a seamless blend of heritage and tradition, offering sweeping views of the desert horizon.
